Lucy & Leo was founded on the principles of honesty, transparency, and trust. Growing up in New York and seeing the clothing industry first hand, designer and founder Rachel Mednick witnessed a consciousness gap. At a time when people were more conscious than ever about what they were putting into and onto their bodies, it seemed out of sync to think of wearing clothes that were chock-full of chemicals and pesticides. She was disheartened by how little the fashion industry thought about the quality of the fabrics they used, as well as all of the waste they produced as a whole. She would witness parents feeding their children organic foods, making sure they had organic sunscreen, shampoo, and conditioner, but then dressing them in traditional clothes, unaware of the harmful dyes and chemicals used in their production. It just didn’t make sense.

When her little cousin Lucy was born, she was bothered by the idea of her wearing anything that may have harmful chemicals, and realized she could create garments for her that were safe; made from organic materials and produced in the USA. She had bins full of scrap fabrics left over from her time at Drexel University, where she graduated with a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising, and these seemed perfect for this project. To her great delight, Lucy’s mom loved the designs and encouraged her to keep creating. Fast forward to Lucy’s little brother, Leo, and with the addition of him to their family she went on to create a line of baby boy clothes too….and Lucy & Leo was born.

Her commitment to giving back and being socially responsible is very important to Lucy & Leo. They partner with local schools in Philadelphia and New York to teach kids, through sewing, about their immediate impact on the environment and their communities. They help kids to design and make stuffed animals and tote bags out of the scrap fabric that would otherwise end up in our landfills, and then they donate the finished product to local shelters to help children in need!
